Paul challenges the idea that square dances are dull affairs by calling dances with high-energy live music, and creating an event that is fun, beginner friendly, and promotes a sense of community!
Back in 2002, in Portland OR, Paul began studying with legendary dance caller Bill Martin. Since then he's been calling traditional square dances across the west. He's called at festivals such as the Mission Folk Festival, Portland's Pick-A-Thon, Seattle's Folk Life Festival, and Nimble Fingers Bluegrass and Old Time Workshop (to name just a few!) as well as at pubs, dance halls, and community venues from San Francisco to Vancouver Island. Paul calls with live string bands, and has worked with many great musicians including Bruce Molsky, Pharis & Jason Romero, and Foghorn Stringband.
Paul also organized the successful "Dare To Be Square West" square dance festival in Vancouver BC in 2015. This event featured workshops and public dances, and drew participants from the entire west coast!
Paul teaches the moves right on the floor, so beginners can be dancing in minutes. His calls are energetic and his engaging figures range from simple to elaborate - a perfect match for any crowd! Paul crafts a dance program that is fun, lively, and comfortable for dancers of any experience level.
